Some meetings ago we set to discuss the elements and characteristics that should make a story for children. Among other things, we agreed that audience age was determinant in conditioning any possible answer. Thus, it seems necessary to contextualise and specify our audience before advancing on this discussion.
Having in mind that our aim this year would be to teach in primary schools, let us agree on Argentine primary students of English as a foreign language as our expected audience. This settled, then:
What elements should characterise the stories we choose or create for them?

For me, the elements that characterise the stories (children´s literature) we choose are: the most important is that they should have to fit child´s needs. Besides they should have easy vocabulary, pictures, a pedagogical aim, short sentences and repetitions. To sum up,I think that there are some of children’s stories that aren´t boring and there are readers of all ages reading children’s books.
ReplyDeleteI consider that the most important elements are the pictures, as well as, the simple language. If the images are clear enough, children can anticipate what the story is about before reading, so we can manage the following tasks (reading the story, doing the activities we have prepare related with the story, etc.) easily. The simple language is essential for the children in order to understand the plot.
ReplyDeleteactivities we have prepareD!!!
DeleteI agree with you my Dear Daniela. Pictures may be the most important element in children stories because pictures are the first thing children look for in a book.So if pictures can catch children attention the content would not be really important to them. I would say that through pictures a new story is being developed in children minds and thatis great!!
ReplyDeleteI also think that images are one the most important features in children's stories that we should consider at the moment of choosing or writing one to share with our students. Regards language, not only should it be simple but it should also be interesting for them. The plot ought to be interesting for them as well. If the story is about something that does not draw their attention then they won't be interested in it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you gils. The stories with pictures can invite the reader (in this case children) to the world created by the writer.
